Unipetrol donates ICT with 1,000,000 CZK

The aim of the cooperation is motivating young students to study chemistry and subsequently to help them succeed in the labour market

Prague, August 17, 2011 – Unipetrol executed a new cooperation agreement with the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Prague. Several projects will be supported by Unipetrol with a donation of 1,000,000 CZK. The main goal of this cooperation is to popularise chemistry among young people and ensure an influx of new talents in this area.

„Unipetrol has been cooperating with ICT Prague for a long time, this year all the more, as we are the general partner of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 in the Czech Republic. It is the cooperation with the ICT that enables us to show young people the perspective of chemical industry,“ said Piotr Chełmiński, CEO, Unipetrol, a.s.

„ICT Prague highly appreciates the continuous support and excellent partnership with Unipetrol. Quality engineering education of our graduates certainly does have big potential for Unipetrol. Our students are well-motivated and highly appreciative of the opportunity to obtain some of the Unipetrol awards for outstanding research work,“ ICT Rector Josef Koubek said.

The aim of cooperation is to support 13 ICT projects and activities, as e.g. “The hour of modern chemistry“. Within this project, two lectors attends primary and secondary schools with aim to attract students to chemistry by showing them interesting experiments. In cooperation with the ICT, Unipetrol also gave financial prizes for winners of the national round of Chemical Olympics.

Unipetrol also awarded prizes to the graduate and postgraduate students of the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague for their best Masters theses and PhD dissertations. The special summer school for secondary schools teachers and ICT experts will take place at the end of August. The purpose of this event is to bring chemistry teachers closer practical chemistry and to help them in making chemistry more interesting and understandable for students. Only one third of students consider chemistry to be their favourite subject, according to the results of a Unipetrol public opinion survey. The reasons for this low popularity are difficulty and uninteresting character of the information being taught.
