Litvínov, September 26, 2017 – Unipetrol has been part of everyday life in the Ústí Region for almost eighty years now. All this time it has been promoting social and community development of the entire region in terms of sport, culture, social care, education, and environment. The company is now presenting its relationship to the region in the ongoing campaign via green-white billboards and a tram connecting the towns of Most and Litvínov.
A tramway dressed in Unipetrol’s colors has been running between the towns of Most and Litvínov. It has been supplemented by forty outdoor advertisements and the same number of billboards that are placed across the whole Ústí Region pointing out Unipetrol’s long-term support of regional development. Because this is the area to which Unipetrol pays the maximum attention over the long term. „The tram and the ads should remind people of the fact that Unipetrol is not only a refinery. It is part of the life in the entire region, an important employer and supporter of social events at all levels,“ says Unipetrol’s Marketing Director Aleksandra Skalska, adding: „The locals can meet the tram decorate in our colors until August 2018.“
Every year Unipetrol financially supports local towns. Annually it redistributes millions of crowns to the municipalities in which it operates. On top of that, the company together with its employees also helps children’s homes and non-profit organizations via its charity collection “Fulfilled Wishes”. Since its launch they contributed over 1.2 million crowns. A total of 396 thousand crowns were raised and then redistributed to four non-profits this year. Over 130 thousand crowns were donated to the Children’s Home in Most to name one example.
Unipetrol also focuses on the support of education. Its main goal is to popularize the study of chemistry, improve study conditions and increase the employability of graduates on the labor market. These activities are carried out via the Unipetrol Foundation which yearly distributes at least six million crowns to university and high school students. Half of the money aims at students of natural and technical sciences whose financial situation does not allow them to fully develop their talents. The other part contributes to the realization of student seminar projects and technical equipment of schools. This year, for instance, this money helped with the reconstruction of EDUCHEM High School in Meziboří u Litvínova with which Unipetrol has been long cooperating.
There are two research centers directly in the production plant in Záluží u Litvínova: Výzkumně vzdělávací centrum UniCRE (Research and Educational Center UniCRE) and Univerzitní centrum VŠCHT Praha – Unipetrol (University Center UCT Prague – Unipetrol) which is the only branch of a public university operating within the premises of a private company. Forty university students are thus studying four majors in the premises of a chemical plant. Unipetrol also annually supports the Chemical Olympiad for middle and high school students. This year’s national finals were held – for the first time in the competition’s history – in a production plant, the chemical complex in Záluží.
Unipetrol is one of the largest employers in the Ústí Region thanks to its 4,500 employees, half of whom work in Litvínov. Unipetrol is also regularly involved in a number of other areas. The local HC Verva Litvínov ice-hockey club prepared several Olympic and world champions, all this thanks to Unipetrol’s support. We should also mention the environmental support. This year Unipetrol invested over one billion crowns in environmental protection. It cooperates with the Environmental Center Most for the Ore Mountains Area and regularly participates in planting fish population into the Bílina River – several thousands of kilograms have been planted so far.
