Anglers and primary school pupils release fish into the River Bílina twice yearly. This year’s fish stocking was witnessed by the fifth graders from the primary school in Most, who released 150 kg of fish, i.e., about 855 pieces, together with anglers. This event, which is popular with children, was organised by the ORLEN Unipetrol Group with the Czech Anglers’ Union and the Most Environmental Centre. The Group has helped release over ten tonnes of fish worth CZK 1 million into the Bílina since 2010.
“Supporting projects improving the environment in our region is one of our priorities. We have cooperated with the Czech Anglers’ Union on the project of revitalising the River Bílina since 2010. I am happy that we can combine unique experiences with practical lessons for the primary school pupils together with the Most Environmental Centre,” says Katarzyna Woś, Vice-Chair of the board of directors of the ORLEN Unipetrol Group, about the project.
“We always carefully choose the composition of the fish species released into the river. This time, we will release about 150 kg of fish, including a prevailing share of roach, rudd, bream, but also carp, perch, pike and other species for the variety’s sake,” says Jan Skalský, a spokesman for the Czech Anglers’ Union, North Bohemian branch. He adds: “During the release, the children learned about the most frequent species in the Czech rivers and interesting information about their behaviour throughout the year.”
The ORLEN Unipetrol Group is involved in environmental protection in the region by supporting many projects. Besides the regular fish releases into the rivers Bílina and Elbe, the Group monitors the nesting of the critically endangered peregrine falcons and supports beekeeping at Spolana Neratovice.
