Unipetrol awards scholarships worth CZK 160k to Schola Humanitas students in Litvínov

14-11-2019

Unipetrol has for the third time handed out scholarships to successful students of its partner school in Litvínov, Schola Humanitas. A total of CZK 160,000 has this year been distributed among 31 students. The scholarship programme is thus meeting its motivating role because the number of the rewarded students keeps rising each year. The scholarship awarding ceremony also saw the delivery of a gas chromatograph to be used by the school. The unique instructional machine worth CZK 500,000 has been provided within the Unipetrol Foundation’s grant scheme.

The official handover ceremony was held in the Schola Humanitas’ auditorium in Litvínov. A total of 31 students with excellent study results were presented with scholarships worth CZK 160,000. The school also received a gas chromatograph for CZK 500,000 donated by the Unipetrol Foundation. Schola Humanitas is one of the two partner secondary schools of Unipetrol in northern Bohemia. The other one is Educhem located in Meziboří u Litvínova which has already been granted scholarships for this school year.

Unipetrol backs the scholarship holders in Litvínov not only through financial rewards but also through their involvement in various Unipetrol Foundation activities,” says Michał Chmiel, HR Director of the Unipetrol Group. “There, they can apply both their theoretical insights and gain invaluable practical experience. For example, many scholarship holders have helped us to manage our projects ‘Spanilá jízda’ or ‘Báječné dny s chemií’. Besides that, they are involved in joined chemistry classes for primary schools and they have also represented their school and our foundation during the Horizon Grand Prix of hydrogen car models designed by the students,” Michał Chmiel adds.

The scholarship and its amount depend on the fulfilment of the rules of a point-based scholarship system. The most important criteria include the average results in all subjects up to 1.5; standings in the competition for special secondary-school projects and achievements in the district, regional or even nationwide subject-specific Olympiads. “The scholarships boost the student motivation to get better results and have greater responsibility in the long term. In the school year 2016/17, fifteen Schola Humanitas students received scholarships. Their number grew by eight in the next year and this year, even 31 students met the scholarship criteria,” explains Ladislav Turbák, Statutory Deputy Principal at Schola Humanitas.

This year’s awardees include both students who have won the scholarship for a third consecutive time and new faces. For example, Šimon Suchopárek has received scholarships since his second year at the school. He was granted CZK 20,000 in the final year because he completed it with distinction in both semesters and he passed his final examination with distinction, too. In addition, he won the regional round of the competition for special secondary school projects in biology, and he achieved the same success in the nationwide round. Thus, he became the third student of this school winning the nationwide contest. In this new school year, he started studying applied ecology at the University of Life Sciences in Prague.

A cheque for CZK 40,110 is an ever-highest scholarship given by Unipetrol to a Schola Humanitas student. It was presented to Dominik Krupka for his fourth-year study results. Besides excellent results, his evaluation included his victory in the regional round of the chemistry Olympiad and the tenth place in the nationwide round. He ranked third in the ecology Olympiad in the regional round and fourth in the biology Olympiad. He also won in the regional round of the competition for special secondary-school projects and ended up in the eighth place in the nationwide round. After the final secondary-school examination, he was admitted as one of only two successful candidates at the Faculty of Military Medicine, field of Military Pharmacy, in Hradec Králové.

Schola Humanitas – the secondary school for the protection and renovation of the environment – in Litvínov is a partner school of the Unipetrol Group. Unipetrol gives both the students and their teachers an opportunity to attend and study at various workshops and debates and it also offers special tours around its operations. Unipetrol experts also support students with their practical experience when writing final secondary school project papers. Moreover, students can get involved in research or take part in special practical training and summer jobs. Schools can use material assistance such as deliveries of chemical glass, discarded computers and certain chemical substances.
