On Wednesday, November 6, 2019, from 9 to 10 AM, an emergency drill will take place at the Kralupy refinery. This drill will not affect the surrounding areas and the inhabitants of the nearby municipalities of Kralupy and Veltrusy. Warning sirens on the site may be heard during the drill, but they will only apply to internal units. The main goal of the drill is to verify the Unipetrol Group’s set emergency plan.
“We perform this drill within the framework of ensuring emergency readiness and fulfilling the duties stipulated by the Major Accidents Prevention Act. Even though we are legally obliged to perform this drill every three years, we perform it each year in accordance with our above-standard approach to ensuring safety,” explains Jaroslav Hacko, production director at the Kralupy refinery that belongs to the Unipetrol Group. He adds: “This year at Kralupy, we will be simulating a leak of toxic hydrogen sulphide and a mixture of hydrocarbons as a result of which two employees will become unconscious. Fire-fighters and emergency medical services will intervene on the spot, and crisis staff will be called.”
Within the framework of the emergency drill, apart from the functionality of the internal emergency plan, the abilities and skills of participating employees and other intervening persons are verified. The set communication with responsible authorities is also checked.
