“This time, approximately 300 kilograms of fish were released into the river. The majority of them were transported from the Barbora Reservoir in Duchcov where they were fished out at the end of October. We sorted the fish at the North Bohemia Section’s fish-breeding facility in Chabařovice and also added several attractive species, such as pike and catfish,” says Jan Skalský, spokesman for the Czech Anglers Union’s North Bohemia Section.
“The primary goal of our joint project with the Czech Anglers Union, which we started in 2010, is to revitalise the Bílina River. We release fish twice a year, in the spring and in the autumn. Together with the Most Ecological Centre, we also try to use this activity to increase children’s interest in the environment,” says Pavel Sláma, director of the EKO unit at Unipetrol.
The species structure of the fish released into the Bílina River has remained the same as in previous years. It includes the Common Bream, the Silver Bream, the Common Roach, the Common Rudd, the European Perch, and the Ide. “However, we know that the participants are always happy with bigger fish they are familiar with, such as carp, pike and catfish, so we added some. It’s amazing to see the joy in their eyes when they release “their” carp or bream,” adds Jan Skalský.
The participants were very interested in what fish species were the most widespread in Czech rivers, what they fed on and how they behaved. The troubled history of the Bílina River, in which life was successfully restored, was also mentioned. Over the past three decades, the cleanliness of the water in the river has significantly improved and this improvement continues to this day.
In addition to the Bílina River, Unipetrol also takes care of the Elbe. Fish are released in Neratovice in the immediate vicinity of the Spolana production plant in collaboration with the local anglers’ organisation. Regular angling competitions and thorough monitoring of the state and condition of the local fish population attest to the cleanliness of the water close to the plant.
