Refining and petrochemical ORLEN Unipetrol Group reported excellent financial results for 2021. Despite many global and regional challenges, the Group’s revenue increased by 61 percent on the year to a record-high of CZK 133.6 billion. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA LIFO) rose to CZK 6.3 billion. The Group’s net profit jumped to CZK 3.2 billion. ORLEN Unipetrol continued implementing its intensive investment plan with last year’s investments of CZK 8.5 billion. In the retail segment, ORLEN Unipetrol successfully continued developing the Benzina ORLEN network in the Czech Republic, developing electromobility, and growing fast in Slovakia.

“After the challenging 2020, we have managed to get back to our long-term plan in the last year and even reported record-high revenue. We have invested over 40 billion crowns in the last five years and we can reap the harvest now. We have also optimized and streamlined our internal processes and implemented a number of synergy effects within the entire ORLEN Group. I want to thank all employees and business partners for overcoming a challenging time together and not easing up our investment, manufacturing, and business efforts,” says Tomasz Wiatrak, CEO of the ORLEN Unipetrol Group. He adds: “We continued to gradually implement our strategic development plan until 2030, where we emphasise modernisation, decarbonisation, recycling, digitisation, and reinforcing of the petrochemical segment, including tests of the chemical recycling of plastics. In the retail segment, we continued our preparations for electromobility. We are a leader in the fuel market but have also become a leader in the number of electric chargers at our fuel filling sites.”

The volume of processed oil reached 7.1 million tonnes. Sales of refining products totalled 5.8 million tonnes, and sales of petrochemical products stood at 2.0 million tonnes. The total investment of CZK 8.5 billion went primarily to the ongoing modernisation of production technologies in both refineries, revitalisation of the partial hydrogen oxidation unit, construction of a brand-new unit producing fluid hydrocarbon DCPD, the eleventh cracking furnace at the steam cracker, and development of the retail network of filling stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In research and development, the Group launched the testing of pyrolysis recycling of plastics. The ORLEN Unipetrol Group expects that in 2030, recycled materials will make up to 20 percent of the petrochemical production.

In the retail segment, the ORLEN Unipetrol Group continued investing in modernising and developing the Benzina ORLEN network of filling stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Group runs 424 sites in the Czech Republic. The Stop Cafe concept is available at 327 outlets. With a 25 percent share in the fuel sales market (as of 31 October 2021), Benzina ORLEN is the largest chain in the Czech Republic. The Group also works to expand the electromobility infrastructure. At the end of 2021, it operated electric chargers at 41 filling stations, making it a top provider among the chains active in the Czech market. In Slovakia, the ORLEN Unipetrol Group is one of the fastest-growing chains. It had 22 stations in its network at the end of 2021.
