ORLEN Unipetrol and Pražská plynárenská to cooperate in developing hydrogen mobility and reducing emissions

ORLEN Unipetrol, the largest local refining and petrochemical group, and one of the most significant local utilities, Pražská plynárenská, have signed a memorandum of cooperation. The memorandum targets the sharing of expertise and future collaboration, primarily in reducing emissions and the carbon footprint. In this respect, the companies see great potential in using hydrogen and generating low-emission energy.

“As part of the strategy we have adopted, we committed ourselves to cutting emissions by one fifth until 2030 and becoming emissions-neutral by 2050. Meeting these objectives is a great challenge for us also because we see ourselves as one of the pillars of the Czech economy and we feel responsible too guarantee continuity deliveries of strategic products to domestic market. That is why I am pleased that we can cooperate with Pražská plynárenská in this respect, as it also has as ambitious goals as we do. I believe that together, we will contribute to a better and sustainable future of the Czech Republic,” says Tomasz Wiatrak, CEO of the ORLEN Unipetrol Group.

The ORLEN Unipetrol Group plans to invest CZK 35 billion in modernisation, higher efficiency, digitisation, and sustainable projects by 2030. The main tasks include the planned construction of a gas-and-steam cogeneration heating plant and a photovoltaic installation in Záluží u Litvínova, development of alternative fuels offered at Benzina ORLEN filling stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, plastic recycling, manufacture of advanced biofuels, hydrogen infrastructure development for passenger car transport, and road freight and rail transport of goods. In addition, ORLEN Unipetrol plans to equip 54 stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia with hydrogen refilling pumps and build three hydrogen distribution centres.

As part of its strategic objectives, Pražská plynárenská wants to offer its customers at least 75% of green products in the future. Also, it intends to strongly support the use of state-of-the-art technology solutions, flexibly react to the challenges posed by the new energy sector and provide expert consulting related to the implementation of innovative technologies and energy savings. Last but not least, Pražská plynárenská wants to ensure carbon-neutral operations as part of its group.
