Thanks to Unipetrol’s support, young breams and perches are now swimming in the Bílina River

26-04-2017

Litvínov, April 26, 2017: Children from the local elementary school released more than 200 kilograms of fish fry into the Bílina River in the middle of the town of Hostomice, Teplice Region. The fish, especially freshwater breams, European perches, common rudd and common roaches were provided by the Czech Fishing Union on the occasion of the Earth Day. Unipetrol has been cooperating with the Union since 2010 planting together roughly 4.7 thousand kilograms of fish worth half a million crowns into the rivers of the Ústí Region.

The Unipetrol Group has been building its social responsibility program for many years as evidenced by this traditional cooperation with the Czech Fishing Union during the young fish stocking into the Bílina River twice a year,“ says Pavel Sláma, Director of Unipetrol Group’s EKO Unit and adds: „Control monitoring confirms the increase in the number of fish and the natural recovery of fish population in the river. We cooperate with the North Bohemian organization of the Czech Fishing Union even during the volunteer days. Our employees help to clean the river banks in the surroundings of Most.“

The fish brought from the fish breeding tank in Chabařovice were planted at four different locations along the Bílina River in order to achieve optimal results in the fish population growth,“ explains Václav Jelínek from the North Bohemian Territorial Union of the CFU.
The roach is the most common fish in the Czech Republic. It lives in flocks and is hunted by most of predatory fish.  The European perch on the other hand falls into the group of predators, forms flocks in which it also hunts. The freshwater breams are omnivores, quite popular among sport fishermen. And last but not least, the common rudd lives in flocks and feeds mainly on plant-based food sources. All the above-mentioned species form the basis of natural fish community typical for this river.

Fish are also stocked in the Elbe River; in Neratovice in cooperation with the local organization of Neratovice fishermen. Unipetrol’s manufacturing plants are the appropriate nesting site for peregrine falcons. Unipetrol employees take care of them in cooperation with Alka Wildlife Association. Couples of peregrine falcon nest periodically in production sites in Záluží u Litvínova, Kralupy nad Vltavou and Neratovice.  The young are being expected as all three couples have nestled already.
