Children from Hostomice grammer school planted new fish into the Bílina river

06-11-2015

Prague, 6 November 2015 – In collaboration with the Czech Anglers Union, Unipetrol has planted a second batch of fish in the Bílina river this year. This time children from three classes of the Hostomice elementary school also arrived to help. In total, 375 kilograms of native freshwater fish species were planted in Bílina on Friday the 6th of November. The total price of the fish exceeded 30 thousand Czech Crowns.

“We have had great experience with working with children. The children were happy to help plant species such as the common roach, European perch, European bream or the common rudd. Supporting free-time activities and deepening the relationship of children and youth with nature is one of the primary activities of the Czech Anglers Union,” says Václav Jelínek, Economy manager of the Czech Anglers Union. "We provided an on-site expert commentary for the children, after which we gave them the required tools and let them actively release over 1,000 fish directly into the river,” continued Mr. Jelínek.

Fishermen loaded the fish in the early hours of the day in the Chabařovice store-ponds, and the first part of the planting took place in Lbín. This was followed by the Zlatníky and Želenice. Hostomice was the location of the last planting. The planting added an abundant number of native fish species into the Bílina river. The common roach is the most widespread fish in the Czech Republic; it lives in schools and represents the basic food of most carnivorous fish. On the other hand, the European perch is a carnivorous species that lives and hunts in schools. The European bream is an omnivorous fish that is very popular among sports fishermen. And last but not least, the common rudd lives in schools and mostly eats plants. All of these form the basic spectrum of fish species living in rivers such as Bílina.

“Test measurements confirm that the fish planting in Bílina was successful, leading to an increase of the number of fish and a gradual and natural restoration of the original fish population levels. We plan to continue in this collaboration also next year,” said Pavel Sláma, Director for environment and IMS at Unipetrol RPA. The company has been collaborating with the Czech Anglers Union on planting of fish in the Bílina river since 2010, always twice a year – in spring and autumn. The total investment of the company into this activity has already exceeded 400,000 CZK.
