10-04-2012

The new interactive program lets visitors experience on their own what is taking place in the chemical production processes at Litvínov’s Chempark Záluží.

Litvínov, 10 April 2012 – Unipetrol RPA and the Ecology Center in Most have put together a new, interactive educational program “A Journey through the Mystery of Crude Oil”, which shows what is happening in the chemical manufacturing processes at Chempark Záluží. The program is designed to be fun, entertaining and educational. This unique learning tool has been designed to appeal to elementary and secondary school students. It has been put together as an animated, interactive story. All those interested in taking this virtual tour of Unipetrol RPA can download this new program from the company website www.unipetrol.cz.

“By making this new program ‘A Journey through the Mystery of Crude Oil’ available to the public, we hope to encourage the public’s interest and awareness of the production processes that are taking place at Unipetrol RPA. We hope that, in addition to students, many other residents of the Ústí Region will also take this interesting tour of Chempark Záluží. It is designed to give them information about the production processes taking place behind the factory’s gates,” commented the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Unipetrol, Piotr Chełmiński. “With this new interactive program, we will be adding to the project we started with the website www.zazijchemii.cz (Experience Chemistry). We hope this new program will also turn out to be an interesting and modern way to learn about all the wonders the world of chemistry has to offer,” added CEO Chełmiński.

The interactive program, “A Journey through the Mystery of Crude Oil” is divided into several sections, “Refinery”, “Petrochemistry”, “Agrochemistry” and “Ecology”. It describes the processes that are taking place in each of these areas. The visitor is accompanied in their journey through the program by two guides – a numbers person, Ms. Numbers, and a chemist, Mr. Catalyst. During the interactive tour of the chemical works, these two guides will assign the visitor various tasks. For example, to help with the fractional distillation of crude oil at atmospheric pressure, the visitors will be asked to help complete equations, set temperatures and pressures in the reactor for the production of ammonia and the visitor will be asked to select the right clothing and protective gear to be worn by a visitor to the facility.

“A Journey through the Mystery of Crude Oil” is a program, which can be downloaded for free from the Unipetrol website. No special software is needed to run this program. The entire tour takes approximately 30 minutes and it has been designed to be used in a classroom setting with the children’s teacher adding his/her own comments and explanations. The program was developed by the Ecology Center in Most with the assistance and support of experts from the company Unipetrol RPA.

In November 2011, the Unipetrol Group launched the website www.zazijchemii.cz (Experience Chemistry). This website was designed for use by students in elementary and secondary schools. This web portal is designed to introduce students to the modern world of chemistry by showing them how interesting and fun this field and world of science can be. It does so through the use of entertaining videos, tutorials on how to conduct chemistry experiments and finally, tests. This website was also designed be a helpful and useful tool for chemistry teachers and it was one of the contributions of the Unipetrol Group in support of last year’s International Year of Chemistry in the Czech Republic.
