Prague, 27 th September 2011 – Two chemical fairs took place recently as part of the International Year of Chemistry 2011. The first was held on Wednesday, 21 st September at Mírové náměstí in Ústí nad Labem. Two days later the fair returned to Prague, to Vítězné náměstí in Dejvice. Both events drew thousands with their attractions, especially the primary and high school students.
“The goal of these fairs is to rouse interest in chemistry as such and to show its necessity in everyday life. We would like to show especially young people that chemistry is not just boring work in laboratories, but that it can also be fun,“ said the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Unipetrol, Piotr Chełmiński.
Apart from various chemical experiments the fair’s visitors could personally experience the importance of chemistry in everyday life. Also the Unipetrol Group presented its attractions and prepared several fun chemical experiments, including molecular gastronomy, where excellent ice-cream was produced using liquid nitrogen. The Prague students were interested in the educational show of the well-known moderator and chemist Michael Londesborough.
Unipetrol brought to the fairs the fire fighting container vehicle with hydraulic arm, a tank car from Petrotrans or a testing station from SGS company, regularly used for controlling fuel quality at the Benzina filling stations. The luckiest visitor could win a bicycle in a contest.
The series of public events supported by Unipetrol as part of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 was launched by the Chemistry and Fuels event in the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague area in mid-May. After stops in Pardubice and Ústí nad Labem, the Friday fair at Vítězné náměstí symbolically closed the journey of chemistry in search of students.
