Unipetrol RPA: 3.3 Million Work Hours without a Serious Injury

22-10-2012

As of September 22, Unipetrol RPA employees have logged more than 3.3 million work hours without an occupational injury and a subsequent absence from work. The last occupational injury with an absence from work occurred at the company on 22 September 2011. Occupational safety is a priority at Unipetrol RPA, which has invested 473 million crowns into this area in the last 10 years.

"The current period of more than 14 months without an injury that would require an absence from work, represents the longest period of time without an injury of this type in the history of the company," said Pavel Sláma, Director of the Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Section. "Between 2007 and 2009, we managed to work 4.8 million hours without an incapacitating injury," he added.

As part of the safety related investments it has made in recent years, Unipetrol has renovated and reinstalled firefighting equipment, installed remotely controlled solenoid valves on the H2S pipeline to the Claus unit and a system for leak detection on the C4 pipeline  for fractions and ethylene. The fire extinguishing system of the ethylene unit has also been rebuilt, a water aperture has been installed on the ammonia filler and the control systems and electronic fire alarms for the operational units have been rebuilt.

During the 2011 – 2013 period, the company has had an Action Plan to further improve safety at work. Each year it carries out campaigns focused on particular priority areas related to safety – in particular the prevention of accidents, emergency situations and finding and correcting hazardous conditions and near misses. The current campaign is focused on safe driving – in particular, of company vehicles. It is supported by the face of well-known Czech rally driver Roman Kresta.
