Unipetrol supports the Science in the Streets project

22-06-2007

Unipetrol became the general partner to the Science in the Streets project for this year. The project is organised by the Czech Head initiative, which supports scientific and technological intelligentsia. Its objective is to popularise science and increase the social prestige of domestic science and technology researchers. The event will be held in several places in Prague between 22 and 23 June 2007; it will continue in Plzeň in the autumn and then in Brno. The visitors will be able to see and try many interesting technologies that make everyday life much easier and better.

Prague, 22 June 2007 - Unipetrol has been the strategic partner to the Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague since 2002. This is also why both institutions decided to prepare a joint presentation. The presentation will take place at Náměstí Republiky and experts from ICT and Unipetrol will present the best chemical technologies that protect and cure us. Their booth will focus both on the hazards and benefits of ultraviolet rays and offer all comers to test the protective factors of sunbathing creams, UV filters of sunglasses and spectacles, as well as tests of water quality using UV rays, totally free of charge.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays account for 3% of solar energy. It scorches the skin and can cause various health problems including eyesight damage. It can also be very useful – it is used for curing various skin diseases and disinfecting water and food. Chemicals active in the UV area of the spectrum are used for branding banknotes and valuable papers as well as museum exhibits.

The central presentation at Náměstí Republiky will also feature the mobile transfusion unit of the Central Military Hospital in Prague. Those, who register at any site of the Science in the Streets project during the event and then show up for blood donation at the Central Military Hospital in Prague within 30 days afterwards, will receive a popular Czech film on DVD as a gift from Benzina. Several dozen cult movies and fairytales will be on offer. Those who donate blood directly at Náměstí Republiky on 22 June from noon to 4 pm will also receive a gift DVD.
