The refinery and petrochemical group Unipetrol has published its financial results for the second quarter of 2020. Unipetrol’s revenue amounted to CZK 15 billion. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA LIFO) totalled CZK 587.4 million. Unipetrol focuses on investments. In the past quarter, Unipetrol invested CZK 3.9 billion, up 137% year-on-year. The financial results were affected by low margins in the refinery and petrochemical industry, the turnaround at the chemical plant in Záluží u Litvínova, and restrictions related to measures taken against the spread of the coronavirus.
“Despite the unfavourable macroeconomic situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the restricted availability of production capacities due to the planned maintenance of production technologies, we posted satisfactory results. We continue with investments that will have a positive effect in the near future,” said Tomasz Wiatrak, general director of the Unipetrol Group, who added: “Within the framework of the turnaround at the Litvínov plant, we succeeded in preparing our production technologies for a new four-year cycle. I am pleased that during the turnaround work, there was no spread of the coronavirus inside or outside the plant, mainly as a result of the successful preparation and realisation of a whole range of unprecedented measures unparalleled in the history of the Czech chemical industry. Even during the state of emergency, we continued to supply vehicle fuels for the Czech market and maintained the same level of investments and the same number of employees.”
The volume of processed crude oil totalled 0.776 million tonnes. Sales volumes amounted to 1.013 million tonnes for refinery products and 0.286 million tonnes for petrochemical products. Investments in the second quarter of the year totalled CZK 3.9 billion. Investments in the second quarter of the year amounted to CZK 3.9 billion and were aimed primarily at the expansion, greening and maintenance of production technologies and the development of the Benzina filling station network in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
In the retail segment, Unipetrol continued to invest in the modernisation and development of its network of filling stations in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Since the beginning of the year, it has expanded 19 filling stations in the Czech Republic with the Stop Cafe refreshment concept, which is now available at 308 out of the current 417 filling stations. Despite the generally unfavourable situation caused by the spread of the coronavirus, Unipetrol strengthened Benzina’s leading position on the filling-station market in the Czech Republic and increased its market share to 25% (as of May 31, 2020). Benzina’s Slovak network comprises 11 filling stations.
